What’s your coverage stage?
Your prescription drug plan includes four stages of drug coverage. The stage of drug coverage you’re in affects how much you pay for covered drugs.
Yearly deductible stage
Beneficiaries pay the full cost of their drugs until they meet the plan’s deductible.
Initial coverage stage
Plans pay their share of the drug cost and beneficiaries pay copays and/or coinsurance amounts. Also, beneficiaries stay in this stage until they reach their initial coverage stage spending limit, which is set by Medicare.
Coverage gap stage
Beneficiaries pay 25% of their drug costs. This cost may be lower if you receive assistance from the government’s Extra Help program. Also, beneficiaries stay in this stage until they meet their coverage gap stage spending limit, which is set by Medicare.
Catastrophic coverage stage
This stage begins after your year-to-date out-of-pocket costs exceed $8,000. During this stage, you pay $0 for the cost for generic drugs and for all other drugs.
